I have Yankee Thunder billet targets made of C500 steel 3/8 and 1/4 inch thick. I\’m concerned about damaging them with .556. I tested a green tip against railroad ties and the went right through. Worried about damaging my new billets, I asked them what ammo I can shoot without damaging the targets. They said use non-frangible bullets but my research shows frangible\’s blast into dust and are less likely to penetrate a target which suggests it would be easier on the steel. They suggest a soft lead tip bullet. Now I\’m confused. Can you suggest the best bullet for me so as to minimize target damage. Please advise. Thank you.
I\’ve only had experience with AR500.
3000+ FPS velocities will damage the steel. 62 grain green tip has the thin wire inside of it to assist in penetration through steel but I\’ve seen 45 grain Vmax and 55 soft points do damage as well because the steel was close, ~50 yards
Placing the steel face at a slight downward angle and setting the targets at a longer distances to allow the bullet to slow down before impact, will lengthen the life of the steel target.
